Oh Olympics hype, how I do loathe your omnipresence. As with seemingly most mobile-device-based games nowadays, you cannot seem to escape the pull of such an all-encompassing event of worldwide proportions, and the resulting tendency for game developers to hop right on the train with a one-way ticket to hype city. However, unlike most other football events such as the world cup, I actually enjoy the Olympics and am pleased to see a football title that lets you assume control of the teams that featured in the football side of the medal-fuelled action. U-Play Online's 'Striker Soccer London' puts you smack bang in the middle of a stadium with the world's teams at your fingertips.

Tap-tastic

Though the game offers four separate modes in which you can play the game, the simple joystick/tap mechanic underpins all of the action. The on-screen joystick lets you move your players around, with the computer selecting the active player that it deems most appropriate for you based on the location of the ball. There are no buttons for shooting/passing/tackling since these actions simply require tapping in different manners to activate them: a short, sharp tap will cause you to pass if you are in possession of the ball or press/tackle the opponent if you are chasing after it. A more forceful kick is achieved if you tap and hold the screen, causing an indicator bar to appear after which you should release your grip and a goal-worth kick takes place as a result. The range of skills is indeed limited, but what do you expect from a light-hearted game of accessible football goodness?

Match after Match

The four gameplay modes I mentioned previously include the obligatory 'Olympic Cup' mode gives the game its Olympic theme, allowing you to choose your team and enter into a tournament against the teams that featured in the London Olympics. This mode also has four save slots so that you can save your progress, returning to the action after your boss stops shouting at you for playing on company time. Friendly matches can also be played, as well as 'Kids' mode offering the opportunity for younger minds to play without the need to worry about controlling the movement of the players. The final mode is penalty-based, engaging you in a pressure-filled penalty shootout.

Closing Ceremony

Variety is not in short supply here, with four game modes offering players differing formats of the game as well as a penalty shootout for contrast. I find it a little irritating that you are limited to the computer selecting the active player for you, but this isn't an overwhelmingly serious issue and is simply a mark of the game's relative simplicity. This game isn't going to win any medals, but it easily qualifies for the quarter finals in the competition of light, shallow entertainment.
