Big Head, Big Heart

The entire premise of the game is unapologetically simple in that it’s simply a side-view football game in which the main objective is to score goals; this much is certain from the outset. The only problem is, we have a little deviation from the football norm from here on in, since it’s a 1vs1 affair where every character is 90% head and 10% rest of the body, each player can smash their opponent into disrepair as well a kicking the ball, and each separate character/avatar (of which there are many) possesses their own ‘power kick’ special move which sends the ball careering towards the opposition in a variety of different ways. It is a game with as much emphasis on violence as there is on scoring goals, and it succeeds quite masterfully in blending the two.

Controls and Particulars

The game is controlled via the on-screen buttons, with a left and right arrow in the bottom-left corner which allow you to move your chosen avatar across the screen,  and a ‘Kick’, ‘Jump’ and ‘Power’ button in the bottom-right of the screen. The former two are pretty self-explanatory if you’re familiar with the basics of the English language, and the latter button appears once your power bar at the top is full, allowing you to use a charged shot whereby an aura of energy surrounds you, which upon contact with the ball results in it being shot with excessive force towards your opponent. This power shot almost always results in a ‘Golazo’ moment.

Modes, Multiplayer and Notable features

The game sports three game modes in total, with ‘Arcade Mode’ plunging you into a 1-minute match extrinsic to any league tables, a ‘Tournament’ mode where you fight against randomly drawn opponents from quarter finals onwards, and ‘Survival’, which is essentially just a sudden-death equivalent which ends when you concede a goal. Winning matches rewards you with points that can be spent on upgrading the various attributes of your character such as your speed, jump, kick and power. Points can also be purchased as part of the ‘Freemium’ model on which the game is based. Further longevity to the gameplay is provided by the multiplayer option, allowing you to connect with random opponents through the game centre, as well as allowing you to go up against a friend via Bluetooth.

Knock it On the Head

While the game is indeed about a little bit of rather silly and outrageous mixture of football-based gameplay with a side-view, fighting-genre format, D & D Dream’s ‘Head Soccer’ also offers you a chance for progression, offering skills upgrades, avatars to be unlocked and costumes to decorate your character with. For such a seemingly shallow game, it provides a substantial quantity of entertainment and has an appeal that stretches beyond simply your average football fan. Pick it up, if only for a little bit of a chuckle at the ridiculously large heads bobbing about the screen.
